I’m really not a gardener (sounds silly I know but I hate all the creepy crawlies out there!!) but I would really like to take some pride in my space this year.

The people who owned the house previously put down some sort of tarpaulin and then loads of stones on top but grass grows up through it and I’m aware that I shouldn’t use a strimmer or anything like that incase it hits a stone and smashes a neighbours window and so it alway looks like a little mini jungle.

Can I just simply pull up the tarpaulin and get rid of it? Will I maybe need to put down some grass seed? 😬 any advice would be really really appreciated, my garden gets me down every spring/summer and I really want to make a change this year.

Aww, it's really not as scary as you think. I've never broken a window yet

Join some gardening groups this is a good one on FB.. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2285228522851055260421293873 upload a photo of your space and you will get a lot of help.. don't get overwhelmed by the thought of the whole garden take a small bit at a time.

There is a thread on tattle as well.

My advice is beg steal or borrow, plants etc. if you do a tray of seeds, use half swap the other for other seedlings.

if you want to keep the gravel etc and just want to get rid of the weeds and grass pour a lot of salt on it ( I buy bulk bags online) as long as you don't want to grow anything there.

Our garden was gravelled by the previous owners and weeds and come up through it , which looks crap .

How big is the area? The tarpaulin might be the membrane that goes under the gravel.

Our ground is extremely compared underneath the gtavel and would need a lot of prep to change to grass like top soil and turf , rather than seeds . It's doable, just probably hard work and time consuming .

We also considered pulling it all up and replacing the membrane and then putting fresh gravel.

If you are rethinking your garden , speak to local landscape gardeners and see if they will give quotes for a solution. Otherwise shears and weedkiller will keep the grass at bay if you do it regularly.
