Faulty Kettle

I bought a new kettle two weeks ago. It has started to sometimes not switch off when boiled, just continues to boil. I took it back to the retailer who took it into the back to test it. There she found that I had not packed the base so couldn't test it. My question now is when I return tomorrow with all of it, what if it does switch off when she tests it? It seems to me that she is implying that if it switches off for her then she will not refund my money. This is an electrical item that is not working as it should, I should be able to switch on and leave the room in the knowledge that it will switch off. Any advice before I return tomorrow?

You won't know until you take it in tomorrow, I don't think there's anything you can do unfortunately

If it’s faulty they will have to let you return it. I doubt they will fill it with water and test to see if continues to boil. They will just be returning it to the manufacturers themselves as faulty so I can’t see there being any issue

Just say you want a refund.

Do shops not have 30 day warranties anymore? 😂
The minimum return policy in Ireland & UK is 14 days. Any more days such as 30 day return, is up to the shop to offer if they want to but by law they have to offer at least 14 days. However all electric items have at least a 1 year warranty so if it breaks within the year, you can return for exchange or store credit. Always keep your receipt!!!!!!!! You must have proof of purchase (Receipt).

Let me guess, Argos?

No, <hangs head in shame> The Range. Took it back this morning, he made a show of saying they have never had a problem with any of these. He plugged it in the nearest socket and it didn't work, despite him flicking it on and off. Refunded. Thanks for all the replies. Have now purchased a decent one and made a mental note to stop being so tight.

It would have been Argos but when I went there they had closed the store and moved away.

I had similar with Argos when I tried to return a faulty hedge trimmer and he 'took it in the back to check'.
I wasn't aware Argos had a garden 'in the back'. After arguing until I was blue in the face, I finally got a refund.

The wont test it, I wouldn't worry just say you want a refund.Even if it works for them that doesn't mean anything. Electrical items can be hit and miss when faulty. If they start being funny just say you are not moving from the desk till you get your refund. I honestly don't think you will have a problem

He is an awful loud, bully of a man, kept saying everything must be tested before a refund. But he didn't check the item being retuned by a couple in front of me. Maybe because he was a massive body builder type, he just refunded. He was bullying a pensioner when I left over a 2ft plastic xmas tree, attempting to bend it into an acceptable shape.

I think you would be better off going to another shop in the future. I hope your new kettle will be much better. I got a really nice kettle during the 1st lockdown from Curry's and it started leaking straight away. It would have been easier to get a refund from the dead than them. It took a lot of perseverance but I did in the end. I bought another from Wilkos with a 2 yr guarantee. Kettles don't seem to last.

Best kettles I’ve ever bought have been the really cheap ones you get in Tesco for less than £20

We have had a few of the expensive all singing all dancing ones that cost us £70 upwards - none have lasted particularly long. Now I’ve got a cheap basic one from Tesco that was about £15 and it has lasted YEARS!!!!!!! Never any issues, it just dies the job and I’m always impressed at how long it’s lasted considering it is used multiple times every day.

I could imagine him weilding it around in the air like he was on Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
