Face Masks!

On the bus this morning, lots of people coughing, sneezing etc, didn't see any of them cover their mouth etc!
Do people think we should go back to wearing face masks, particularly on public transport? I know some people still are

I always wear a mask on public transport -- never stopped.

My local GP are back to requesting mask wearing too, as well as my midwifery appts

I was in the waiting room at the drs and the amount of people coughing but not putting their hand over the mouths was shocking.

I was then sent to hospital, I put a mask on, almost every member of staff wore mask. I'm not contagious and I don't have an infection but I definitely felt better wearing one .

So many patients weren't wearing one either. I convinced myself I'd end up more poorly than when I went in based on how many people around were so sick.

Just popped onto this thread as I was interested in home made face masks!
But yes, there is so much flu going around our hospital at the moment, they should deffo be worn on the bus + gp/hospitals

We are continuing to see a high number of patients with respiratory symptoms and Influenza A infection. To protect ourselves and our patients, the use of fluid resistant surgical masks (FRSM) is recommended while caring for symptomatic patients. In addition, staff working in certain areas are recommended to wear a FRSM routinely:

• Emergency Departments
• In wards where there is a risk of transmission of respiratory viruses (e.g.: bays closed due to influenza or Covid, or a symptomatic patient is awaiting isolation).

Please remember:

• Respiratory PPE should be worn by all staff when providing care to a patient with symptoms of a respiratory virus in all settings.
• Patients with respiratory symptoms can be asked to wear a mask when in a communal area/on transfer, but this must never compromise their clinical care.
• Face masks should be offered to visitors in all areas, however this is not mandated and visitors can decide whether they wish to wear a mask.
• Visitors should be discouraged from visiting if they have respiratory symptoms.

It is important to remind ourselves of the diverse impact of mask-wearing on staff, patients and visitors. Masks with visibility for lip reading are available through the Trust procurement team for CSUs to order and use as required.

I don't think it should be mandatory but I do think it should be more accepted like it is in many Asian countries

We had to do an emergency referral to our local hospital for a possible retinal detachment, they requested mask wearing, we provided the patient with several masks, the local press was also reporting that our trust is requesting mask wearing for clinic patients due to being swamped with flue, COVID, noroviris And other prevelent viruses. The patient was a bit nonplussed about the mask wearing, but when I pointed out it was not only to protect her but the staff who if they catch nasty bugs will have to take sick time and not be able to offer emergency appointments and cancel routine pre booked appointments!! She was ok with it then.
