I'm really uncomfortable with the idea that this elf is there to watch your behaviour and then report back to santa. Yet can do naughty things themselves. But I hate the naughty nice aspect of Christmas.

Plus it's just another for the gram thing most of the time.

It really wound me up this morning as I saw quite a few people on social media with their elves bringing their kids presents. Like, they’re not going to be getting enough in 24 days? A woman on my Facebook has two kids that are 15 and 12, so clearly don’t believe in Santa/the elf but she was apparently up at 10 o’clock last night with her glue gun, getting the elf scene ready for this morning. All for some likes online

I am so glad my kids are grown up and the elf wasn’t a thing when they were little. I struggled to remember the tooth fairy so would never have coped with having to get creative with that lanky legged little fucker.

What is everyone's opion of this? I think I am the only one of all my friends that doesn't do this. My entire Instagram was full of the elf this morning.
I personally don't agree with it, unless you are actually going to withhold gifts from your children what is the point in telling them the elf is watching for bad behaviour to report back to father Christmas? No child is completely perfect and I dont want my child worried all December.

But that is just my opinion and I would be intreagued to know what others think/do

Just another thing to add to the list of things that people can’t do in private and it’s all for social media. I love Christmas and I especially like to make it special for the kids in my life but this isn’t something I’m on board with.9

My elves really aren’t that deep, they turn up on the 1st December and bring advent calendars and turn up somewhere new everyday in really unimaginative scenarios because I can’t be arsed

I don’t have kids so I don’t have to do it. I wouldn’t mind doing wee creative things for kids though. So I think the little surprises are good.

However, already on the 1st Dec I’ve seen some pretty horrific, over the top and way overboard set ups. That must have cost a fair bit as it’s all fancy custom balloons and whatnot. In my view that’s not for kids at all but just a way for mothers to brag and compete with each other.

I know people who do elfy stuff through December but don’t plaster all over social media. It’s the braggy competitive ones I’m already eye rolling at.

It’s my first year doing it with my 3 year old, I have just told him the elf has come to stay until Christmas and that he might get up to some mischievous things in the night if he’s a good boy. I’m hoping that Xmas eve when we say goodbye to him that my 3 year old will let him take all his dummies to gift to all the babies that need them so I’m kinda using it for that purpose haha. But at this age I don’t think he really gets the concept of being good otherwise u end up on the naughty list so I haven’t said that as like u say unless your actually not gonna give your child some presents then what’s the point

We did it for 4 years. Kids are now 14 and 12 so obviously we haven't done it for a few years now but they do still return for a north pole breakfast the weekend before Christmas. You're never too old for some Christmas magic

We have an elf, but it's solely used to blackmail my children throughout December.. No way am I going to have it getting up to 'mischevious' activities it literally just sits on shelves and acts as a great threat

I couldn't be arsed with all that Elf business. When I was little we had a satsuma in an old sock with a 5p piece and 2 quality street and we thought we had total luxury.

We have an elf, I quite enjoy it purely for how special my daughter finds it. She loves looking to see what the elves have been upto over night. That being said, our elves have never been here to watch her behaviour and report back to santa! They just hang around for December and generally cause mischief that doesn't make too much mess for me to clean up they bring little Christmas crafts and things too. Tbh they painted dads toenails gold last year I felt was a completely brilliant idea on my part

A woman on my Facebook has had a massive cake made to celebrate the return of the elf, plus personalised cupcakes saying ‘congratulations XXX you’re on the nice list‘ on top of the elf ‘scene’, I think it’s really over the top and it’s not even for the kids’ benefit at this point it’s all for the social media clicks and the ‘ooooh, look at meeee’
I think the tradition itself is nice, especially if kids are only small, but don’t understand the faffing around and trying to ‘upstage’ it year on year, especially when you’ve gone all out one year and then have to think up bigger better ideas the year after! I think it’s easier if the elf brings the Christams pyjamas/crafty bits/bath/baking bits and pieces

Elf on the shelf is nothing but a brag a thon. My socials are FILLED and the expense some people have gone too!! If it’s for the magic and your children great. But if it is why are you posting on social media every single night what you’ve done with the elf. It’s like the finale every year to the mum olympics. Tis the season to show off.

Never did it and sooooooo glad I didn’t. Wouldn’t have made a blind bit of difference in my house anyway, don’t listen to their parents half the time so I doubt a they would a toy

This would so be me if I did it but even the tooth fairy isn’t reliable and I’ve had to whip up an IOU a few days later So poor Elf would be forgotten Occasionally
