Editing in Friends

Has anyone noticed the difference between editing when it was on E4 compared to how it is now on Channel 5?

E4: Removed all mild swear words like witch and bastard and removed sexual jokes. Everything else kept in.

C5: Includes the mild swear words and sexual jokes E4 cut (including showing “the one with free porn” that E4 always removed entirely) but cuts out references to drugs and any jokes where the punchline is anything to do with LGBT. Everything else kept in.

Just an example from the episode on now:

JANITOR: Meet me in the nocturnal house in 15 minutes.

ROSS: Uhh, hey look, I don't really enjoy being with other men that way. But, um, zoo dollars?

C5 cut the line in bold, E4 was fine with it. From the same episode:

PHOEBE: [singing] Sometimes men love women,
sometimes men love men,
and then there are bisexuals,
though some just say they're kidding themselves.

la la-la-la la-la-la-la-la-la-la...

The bolded bit is cut so the scene makes no sense at all. Just wondering why this is, especially the first example.

Yeah, I remember watching Friends on E4 and some lines/jokes not making sense.

I rewatched it on Netflix and noticed loads of lines I’d never heard before

The editing always drives me insane, the only good way to watch is Netflix or dvds. One of the channels also speeds it up so it can fit it into a smaller time slot. It’s subtle so you don’t notice it, maybe 1.2x speed, I can’t remember

Oh that’s interesting re: the speed.

I know it sounds like I’m spoilt but I don’t like watching the DVDs because they have extra footage (I don’t mean cut scenes but new additional scenes) 🤷🏽‍♂️

Oh my god! I usually watch Friends on Netflix but occasionally will watch it on TV and I always wonder why their voices sound almost chipmunk like on TV. It’s not totally noticeable but every now and again I notice it and I thought I was going crazy 😂 I even googled it lol but didn’t find a answer. That makes so much sense now.

I never realised they did it with the full episodes!

They sped the theme tune up a couple of seasons in for sure because when you watch it on Netflix there’s a point from one episode to the next where the pitch has shifted up (#musicianproblems) and it sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks doing a cover version from then onwards 😂 Quite jarring to then hear the original again

I remember the dodgy e4 edits. Like the episode with Emma's birthday cake, they kept cutting sentences that made any reference to it looking like a penis.

OMG when I lived in Dubai it was heavily edited- anything to do with Chandler being gay and the free porn episode too but never expected it in the UK. Sad.

I’ve got all the series currently recording on my sky box, the sweating is blanked but I’ve noticed so many lines I didn’t before. Weird!
