Hi all, I don’t think I have an eating disorder but wanted to start a thread for people to chat and support each other with eating disorders.

Recently, I finally started a diet that worked for me (a healthy, balanced diet) and have lost almost three stone. I feel amazing in my body now, which I never did before.

Now I’m getting towards my goal weight, I’m starting to wonder how to maintain a normal, healthy weight, as I’ve only ever steadily put on weight.

I had a ‘treat’ breakfast this morning of three pancakes (thin crepes) with Nutella. Usually I’ll just eat eggs or fruit or cereal. Immediately afterwards, I felt absolutely disgusting and as if I wanted to go and be sick to get rid of this horrible ‘full’, sweet feeling in my throat.

It’s not the first time I’ve felt disgusted like this (hence the new thread). It’s normal to have a takeaway now and then but I’m starting to feel vile after eating any normal ‘treat meal’.

Do you think I should worry about this spiralling into an eating disorder? Or have I just developed a normal healthy diet and should keep avoiding fatty foods?

I’m not a doctor, but some of my very close friends have had eating disorders so I know what it’s like. Eating a healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise is good both for your body and your emotional well-being, but it’s also very important to know that food is not your enemy and treating yourself from time to time is normal and absolutely allowed. We live in a society that pretty much hates women and pressures them into taking as little space as possible, hence the diet culture, obsession with being thin and shoving idiotic beauty standards up our throats. It should not affect the way you see yourself because you are beautiful no matter what. Your top priorities should be being happy, being healthy and being yourself. If you choose to watch what you eat and avoid certain foods, it’s okay as long as it’s your choice and not something you feel you have to do against your will.

Also, it’s somewhat normal not to like the taste of sweet foods after avoiding them for a while. Your taste buds get used to blander foods and you might notice that some treats you used to like now seem too sweet. It’s completely fine to have a cheat meal every once in a while and there is no need to feel guilty about it. They are said to be boosting weight loss in the long run because your body does not get used to a certain amount of calories per day.

However, if you feel concerned about your weight, your diet or the way you feel about your body and yourself, it might be a good idea to contact a specialist. Good luck! 🍀

I’m the same as you ☹ Been eating healthier and lost almost a stone since last March, but I’ve noticed some worrying things..
  • I have a standing desk at home currently, and I’m constantly moving and listening to music and dancing, it makes me feel good but I’m also aware of the calories I think I’m burning by constantly moving.
  • Getting obsessed with calories in food
  • Having a cheat meal and thinking about when it’s out my system
  • Making food and giving it away to others
  • Feeling hungry most of the day and preferring that to feeling full
  • Feeling bad when I step on the scales and put on weight
  • Obsessed about the health benefits of food, I’m always googling to see what health benefits anything has
  • Googling calories in food
  • Weighing out foods according to calories on the packet

  • I do have counselling and it’s something I’m going to address with her soon but yeah slightly worried I have disordered eating rather than an eating disorder

Hello,

I post on a couple of other threads about things but am struggling and really don’t want to spoiler under “ED”.

So, long story short, after a rubbish couple of years (I suffer from cluster headaches) I have finally admitted that I suffered from binge purge anorexia for several years, probably brought on by a very very stressful job. I was exercising excessively (running a 35 mile ultra with no food etc) and eating nothing except museli and yoghurt.

When my cluster headaches got really bad 2 years ago and my life ground to a halt (I got depression too), I think my very hungry body just wanted to eat so I did and my control stopped. I don’t think it was BED, just my body trying to redress the balance after years of malnutrition.

The last few weeks have been great. I can run and exercise again, the bad eating stopped and for a while the me of 15 years ago came back.

But now I can get into my smallest clothes again and my ED is delighted. So I lie to my wife. I hide the lunch she has made me and I do more exercise while she is at work. Half of me is so happy. Half of me (the real me) is so sad.

The hardest thing is I did psychology to MSc level and taught it for years. I know this tit. I know what I am doing to myself and how to stop it. I can’t and the ED won’t let me.

I just need someone to talk to.

You need to get out of the mindset of there being “good” or “bad” foods or viewing some foods as “treats”

Food is food. It’s fuel for the body. You just have to be mindful now of what you use to fuel your body and keep in mind that should you eat something that’s perhaps more calorie dense then you just have to move a bit more after - do an extra half hours walking that week or whatever. It’s not about “working off” “bad foods” but more keeping a balance between what you eat versus how much you move. It’s good that you have recognised that your thoughts are slightly off so just keep that in mind, and come back to that if you ever feel that kind of disgust or guilt about eating again.
