Dog incontinence - pee

When my elderly dog was ill (didn't realise at first she had a kidney issue) she was weeing on the carpet in the night. We kept getting a guy in to clean the carpet but in the end bought a vax carpet cleaner and this shampoo linked below. Got rid of the smell and I just whipped out the cleaner each time. Quick and easy to do. Bicarbonate of soda is good to use too. Here's the shampoo. A nice big size:

I would advise a vet visit just in case of any issue like infection.

Take your dog to the vet and they will prescribe medication that should stop it

Heya I have just seen this thread.
We have two elderly dogs - one of which was very similar. They are small (under 10kg) dogs and girls but the vet taught us how to push on their lower tummy and find the bladder and manually “help” them wee. Since this, we haven’t had any leaks from her and I think she is more comfortable and will be less likely to get infections due to retained urine. Often when they are leaking it’s because they can’t properly empty their bladders and they are getting full and overflowing.
Previous to this we were using washable nappies to catch drips that I had bought on Amazon. We are also diligent covering sofas with a few layers of cream ikea fleece blankets. We have lots of these that wash and dry SO easily and you can see any accidents. Good luck xx

Stuff like this is the best for pet widdles, just spray it on and enzymes break down the wee. (RSPCA wee away if the link doesn’t show.)


Otherwise just get lots of washable rugs I guess and maybe use puppy pads as bed liners for the absorbency.

Also if you haven’t already maybe check with your vet that there’s no kidney infection or other non-age related issue.

I bought some belly bands for my elderly boy (he's not so much incontinent but when we go stay anywhere he's marking, which I think is anxiety as his hearing declines) and they're really good, although I'm not sure if they'd be as good for girls? He can quite happily trot about with them on and they're dead easy to whip off and pop in the washing machine.

Just after a bit of advice to manage dog incontinence.

I love my dog dearly and she recently turned thirteen but over the last few months she’s become incontinent, peeing. It’s not so much that she pee’s but more of a slow leak when she’s sleeping or relaxing. I make her go outside for pee breaks now to try and manage it.

The thing that is getting me down is the smell. The whole house downstairs are starting to smell like piss. I’ve showered her when I got home and changed all their bedding but I don’t know if there is anything else I can do to try and manage the smell.

I am concerned because I don’t want people round if it stinks and tbh she’s a very healthy, active dog so I can see her being around for a long time. Plus I want her around for a long time!

Has anybody else dealt with this and can you give me some tricks and advice?
I’ve bought some nappies which hasn’t been used yet. I need to figure out how to cut them so she can poo freely. Also got some waterproof sheets for all their beds.
