Do I go for a new job?

Hi guys, looking for some advice on what you would do so here’s a bit of background.

I have worked as a receptionist at a call centre for nearly 6 years. Last May I was put on furlough for 6 months to then be told my position was at risk of redundancy. I was gutted but knew it would happen as a lot of people were working from home and the job role I done wasn’t needed as it wasn’t busy enough for it.

I got offered the chance to transfer to working on security. I have been doing that since November last year and really not enjoying the hours and shifts at all. I was used to working Mon-Friday and the same hours each day so working shifts and weekends is a big change.

My plan was to work on security for a while (I had pictured a few months but covid had other ideas) and see if my job role came back so I could go back to reception. As yet, the reception job has not came back. Where I live the government are still saying work from home. Although plans are in place for people to come back into the office when allowed and I’ve heard a few rumours of other sites, which are the same company as mines, possibly getting a receptionist again.

I love the place I work, the people I would with and the over all job I do. I would really really miss a lot about it if I left.

Now this is not to say I will get offered this job but I applied for a reception job else where and I have an interview next week. The hours are great and Monday to Friday which is what I want. I should be excited shouldn’t i? But I’m not. The thought of leaving my current work place makes me sad. I would hate to leave and then to find out my old job has been brought back.

I feel like deep down I shouldn’t leave just yet. Not with the possibility of offices opening in the next wee while when the government say so/if they ever do.

i have spoke to a couple of close family members, one said defo go for the interview and if it’s not what I want then that’s ok but I feel bad if I was to waste the interviewers time. The other family member basically said fuck the company I’m working for I’m just a number

So basically guys, would you leave the job you love but hate the hours at when you don’t feel 100% like you should just yet as you still have hope your old job will come back? Do I wait it out a bit more?

Do you actually enjoy the role you are in now, just not the shifts? If you actually enjoy the job, then I’d suggest sticking it out a bit longer but I’d also say to be mindful that you may never get your old job back there, even if they do reinstate the reception position.

id personally go to the interview for the reception job at the other place. It will allow you the opportunity to meet the People there face to face and get a feel for the place. If you are then offered the job you’ve got more to go on to make a decision. I wouldn’t pass up the opportunity of an interview, not at the moment when the job market is so shaky. Give yourself options.

If I were in your position I would definitely go to the interview as least then you can see the work place and meet the people you could be working with who knows it could be amazing, you wouldn't be wasting the interviewers time at all good luck

If you’re not totally happy doing the security role then you might wait long enough and not get the receptionist job back. I would go to the interview and see what happens.

I think as well that most workplaces where business has been swapped to WFH, had redundancies etc, when we do get back to work it won’t be the same place it was before lockdown 1. That’s not to say you won’t miss your colleagues etc but it would be a shame to stay doing shift work when there’s no guarantee of a 9-5 job at the end of it.

Thank you so much for your reply! What you suggested is what I’m more swinging towards, waiting a bit longer to see what happens as I do really enjoy the job! It’s just the hours/shifts that are not great.

It’s so stressful isn’t it! I wish I just knew what was happening at my current job but unfortunately due to covid there’s so much uncertainty always thinking what if best of luck to you! X
