I don't suppose anyone here I'd a dental nurse or dentist? Dental nursing is something I often think of going into but I'd like to know what it's really like from people who do the job not just what it says on career websites!

Thanks

Hi am/was!!

I was a dental nurse for 10 years. 5 of those in practice and 5 in a teaching hospital. I absolutely loved working in the hospital.

I left because of pay/career progression. I wanted to climb the bands of the NHS and saw it brought more opportunities for me if I left. I am still registered though.

Would I go back? No. The pay isn’t great and I couldn’t see myself doing it when I am older. If you do want to do it I recommend training in a hospital and staying there - better job security and career progression in the NHS.

Hope that helps and good luck:)

I'm a dental nurse, I worked for a corporate company for years for minimum wage, and the job itself can be hard going. Some dentists can be real nobheads, and patients often take their frustrations out on the dn. There is an awful lot of responsibility involved for minimum wage, not to mention the CPD you must do, and paying to be on the GDC register. Some practices will have you pay for your own indemnity and scrubs uniform also. It is not a glamorous job by any means, if you are someone who likes to have their nails done, and wear make up and jewellery to work then it's not the job for you either. I'm sorry to be negative, but in my honest opinion, after 10 years in the job, there are more negatives than positives.
