Wondering what everyone takes to rid themselves of constant coughing, been over a week now an all the doctor said was take paracetamol

I've went through 4 cough bottles, a throat spray, honey, those sweets, ice lolly, ice cream, and packets of pain killers an nothings shifting it

Anyone got any old wife's tales stuff or crazy things that work that aren't known, honestly it's driving me nuts as during the night it's just constant so willing to try anything now

A humidifier in your room at night to keep the air moist, take some anti histamines, steam your face over a bowl of hot water with some olbas oil in it, try taking a few ibuprofen - it’s an anti inflammatory so it can help to bring down inflammation in your chest/throat etc

Thanks, I'll try the bowl of hot water, I've been taken the nuremol which is paracetamol plus ibuprofen, am honestly more concerned over the amount of stuff am actually taken like I don't think it's too great to be taken as much

Paracetamol won’t do anything at all to help a cough. It’s a pain killer. So, unless you are in pain or feeling that you have a temperature etc you don’t need to take it. Get some normal stand alone ibuprofen from the chemist or supermarket and take that. Drink loads of water to help keep you hydrated, you’ll be fine - cough syrups etc are basically just to lubricate the throat, the over the counter ones don’t contain anything particularly hard core!!!!

coughing comes From something irritating the lungs or the back of the throat - if you’ve got/had a cold you’ll have mucus in there that’s making you cough. Keeping the air moist with a humidifier is really helpful, as if the face steaming.

are you coughing up anything- mucus/fhlem?

Not really an everything else seems fine, there's no swelling or anything, he had a good look and also took a few other tests, it's just a annoyance as it's keeping me up all night

I know this might seem random but Vicks on the feet at bedtime (put socks on too) always seems to help stop my little one coughing in the night.

I don't know why it works but it seems to

cocodamol is a cough suppressant but not sure if you can get that as over the counter?

i’ve just recovered from a horrible cough that kept me up all night for nearly 2 weeks.

a couple of things that helped :

fishermans friends cough mints are probably the best things to suck on.

gargling with warm salt water for a couple of minutes. The saltier the better.

hope you get better soon, i know how horrible it is.

I went an independent pharmacist about the same thing a few years ago and he gave me a bottle of liquid codeine. And wow, did that stop the cough and took away all my worries and anxieties at the same time. It was amazing. In short I can see how people get addicted so beware but it definitely stopped the cough in its tracks 🤣

I've never heard of that before, I'll check it out, is that in the UK?

Yes, a little pharmacy in Westminster. I still have the bottle so took a few photos for you. It’s like magic for persistent coughs but dangerous so do be careful with it.

Eta: it tastes beyond horrendous but I think that’s on purpose to make it unpalatable due to addiction risk

I've tried it myself and I didn't cough in the night, could be psychosomatic but who cares it worked 🤣

I genuinely thought someone was having me on when they suggested it but I still do it now when she has a cough!

I would smear it on your chest and back too, I love the cold warm feeling and the smell 🤣

Honestly I've had more than enough horrendous tasting things so what's one more lol, even if it's just for one or two nights just to allow at least some sleep then I'd be happy, I don't tend to get addicted to anything anyway an can easily stop with whatever

I second the codeine recommendation! Pineapple Queen is right, it's so completely and utterly repulsive that there's no way you'd want to overdose. Another thing that really helps, if you can sleep with your head and shoulders raised and supported on pillows you'll find that a great help too.

Licking a lemon with salt on usually works.Along with olbas oil on the feet and chest.

Omg this was amazing. I had flu when pregnant and i had torn my throat raw from coughing and was so desperate for actual drugs to make me feel better. I was so happy when i was given this!

I don’t think it helps that we’re so paranoid about coughing now! At least once a day, when I’m at work, I manage to choke on water and I turn myself purple trying not to cough!

Hope you feel better soon OP!

I know, it drives me crazy the stares you get now if you cough, it's like other things are not allowed to exist anymore, I get hay-fever so sneeze alot in summer an honestly the dirty looks an stares I get when am out even with my mask on is ridiculous, it's made me stop going out cause I don't want to be standing in ques or shopping while am coughing or sneezing etc

Ive suffered with hay fever since I was a child. Usually runny/stingy eyes in the Spring time.

One year, as an adult, I was coughing non-stop. It was around this time of year. I ended up seeing one of the asthma nurses at my surgery and they said it was seasonal asthma. A blue inhaler and a brown steroid inhaler helped with my constant coughing.

If nothing else suggested on the thread works go back to the doctors and ask to see an asthma nurse or ask them for a chest x-ray in case it’s anything else!
