Copper Coil - Advice Please

Take a test if it will ease your mind.

I had a copper coil fitted in May. Although it’s not hormonal contraception, it does mess around with your cycle, having been poked and prodded to get it put in, and then the psychological side of knowing something is different.

My period are getting closer together. Just had a three week gap! Crazy. If you can, try to give it the first six months before making a decision about it. It takes time to settle down x

If you are pregnant then you are pregnant- taking the test wont alter the fact. You need to know. If you are, and you don’t want to be you have options available but you are going to have to fine out one way or another. ❤

Ffs literally ignore all of my advice because I was thinking of the non copper one 😅 one day my brain will be attached to my body........

Hi, I'm sure you're worried but it's very unlikely you're pregnant. The first few months of the copper coil can be difficult, and even then the periods the whole time it is in can be heavier too. When I had it in, I would start getting bad cramps and all the other PMS symptoms a few days before actually bleeding so it could just be that!

What contraceptive were you using before the coil? Before a copper coil is put in you have be 100% sure you’re not already pregnant. The healthcare professional who inserted it should have gone through that all with you. The copper coil starts working immediately after insertion.
It can take a while to get used to it but it is literally the gold standard for contraception, if the threads are the reason you’re getting it removed you can ask to get them shortened.

Hi everyone, had a copper coil fitted 25th June & had a terrible month with pain, thrush, aching & generally not feeling 100%.

I was due on yesterday (in the morning had terrible cramps) but no bleeding still.

I feel pregnant… and my worry is I am. Or my body is playing tricks - nausea, back ache & fatigue.

Is it worth testing or shall I just wait a few more days? I am having it removed on Wednesday for personal reasons.

Take a test - I doubt your pregnant but there’s no harm doing a test?

I’m pretty sure the copper coil can make you feel all of the above while your body adjusts to the hormones (even though it’s minimal as the coil hormones just go straight to where they need to go), just like any form of contraceptive. It can also stop your periods completely all while having raging PMS symptoms. I’ve had a very similar situation with it and it passed but did take a few months to settle down completely. If you’re absolutely sure you’re not pregnant I would probably get a nurse to double check it’s in properly as you could be feeling not 100% due to maybe a slight infection or something. I think coils are so worth it but I think some people do find the initial insertion and following month or so a right pain in the ass. Hope you’re ok OP.

I had the copper coil in for over 4 years and it does take a while for it to settle. Your body thinks it’s got a foreign body in it (technically it does) and it can take months to settle in.

There would be very minimal chance (as with any contraception) that you are pregnant, but the best thing to do is take a test. Worrying will not help your lack of period either, easy said than done I appreciate.
