Confront friend over cheating?

Grab a cuppa it's a long one..
I'm friends with a couple I've known many years. I spend time with both of them together and apart, I'm closer with the wife of the couple (hereby referred to as A) but also have a really close bond and great friendship with her husband (B), and were also part of a wider close friendship circle.
About 6 years ago A told me that their marriage was facing some problems and that she had kissed (and gone further, but not all the way) with the partner of a couple in this wider friendship circle on a few occasions spanning months. I told her at the time that I thought it was terrible and she said the whole thing was over and would never happen again, I didnt mention it again as I just wished i didnt know.
At that time i had a lot going on in my own life that i was preoccupied with and kind of naturally drifted away from her/them (looking back now I think my feelings toward her cheating played a part) but I had too much to deal with in my own life to give it that much thought.
Fast forward 5 years and we've ended up all reconnecting and spending a lot of time together. The problems in their marriage had sorted themselves out (largely due to husband working on himself massively and really becoming a better person) and everything seems great. I ended up looking back on distancing myself from the friendship and feeling guilty thinking maybe I'd judged too harshly. Few months ago me and A had a few drinks and she confessed to me that she had kissed the same guy again on a night out. I was shocked and told her it was crappy and that whilst it's not an excuse I could kind of see the reason she did before when their marriage was in such a bad place. She said that she felt awful it's never going to happen again etc when I asked why she did it she said (quite nonchalantly) that she was so drunk she didnt know what she was doing, which doesn't ring true to me at all. I've known her for a long time and know how she behaves when drunk which is not that different, we've even spoke about it cos were similar in that way)
A also told me that B had found out years ago about the cheating and chose to put it behind them which was a surprise to me.
The conversation abruptly ended then as we were joined by other people (far as I know I'm the only one who knows about this - lucky me) and we haven't spoken much since (my doing).
Im no perfect person and usually am far from judgemental but I have very strong morals when it comes to cheating and a strong sense of justice toward people being treated unfairly in general, anyone who knows me well knows that, which makes me wonder why she chose to confide in me. I feel burdened with the info.
I've now been looking back and noticed so many things over the years which have made me 🤔. A made a huge show of confronting someone she knows for cheating (people in glass houses and all that), shes borrowed money etc and not returned, asks for pretty big favours often, shes made a massive victim of herself when shes felt shes been treated unfairly (in situations minor in comparison like petty work dramas) but the one that is really bothering me is she is friendly with the partner of the person shes cheating with (to the point where A has been her shoulder to cry on when having relationship problems). A will tell you shes an 'empath' and any given opportunity, which is odd given her behaviour in these situations looking back.
When you choose your friends it's often on the basis that they hold the same values as yourself, it's sad when you realise they dont. But then part of me is torn thinking she has been a good friend in other ways I shouldn't write someone off like that. But mostly I feel bad for B, and keep wondering if he knows I know. It genuinely keeps me up at night.
I've been on the receiving end of cheating and the knowledge that other people knew about it was just as painful as the cheating itself.
I'm currently battling ptsd i dont feel like I have the mental capacity to confront A about this but shes making it near impossible for me to fade into the mist so I dont think i have any choice.
Any advice welcome

Hey, sounds like a real crap situation your friend has put you in.
I have been in a similar situation before, so I told my friend that I would prefer he not tell me about these thigs going on as it's none of my business and I would rather not know.
It's very unfair on you to have to be the one to keep this persons secret.
Maybe try to tell her that you value your friendship with her and that you are there for her, but in this situation you would prefer not to know about any sort of affair.
Hope it works out for you! x

Bottom line - She’s a crappy person.

distance yourself from her. Don’t respond to her calls/messages etc. If she asks why - be straight up and tell her, that her behaviour is crappy and the fact that she has told you what she’s been up to has put you in an uncomfortable position given your friendship with her husband and the other couple.
Tell her that you don’t want to hear or know another thing about her cheating and make it clear that you will not lie for her - that if ever asked in the future, you will tell everyone exactly what she’s been up to.
don’t allow her secrets to become your baggage to deal with.
also - I’d tell your partner everything so he knows why you are cutting her off.

I'm reluctant to say she's an empath. If she was she wouldn't be cheating let alone multiple times.
I think you need to go with your gut on this one. it's obviously making you uncomfortable so do what feels right, distance yourself from her, tell you don't want to hear it again, that you don't want to be involved in any way at all. I think she could be trying to ease her guilt by telling you or maybe she's telling you cause she knows you'll react strongly and she wants you to tell her husband so she will have no choice but to deal with it. Weird I know but many people are too scared to make life changing decisions or confront a situation and would rather someone else do the job for them. I know so many people who would never leave a relationship unless their partner left them.

She seems like an awful person and I don’t think you’d loose anything by slowly distancing yourself from someone like her. In fact, you’d probably be doing yourself a favour.

Thanks for your reply, that's a really polite and eloquent way of putting it. And you're so right, it is an unfair position to put someone in to keep a secret like that. If you dont mind me asking, did this have an effect on your friendship going further? Or did things find their way back to normal after time

Yeah that's kind of what my hearts telling me. My partner is the only one that knows everything already (he knew there was something up as she had started chasing him up - after I'd not responded to her asking for a favour lol)
And you hit the nail on the head with - her secrets have become my baggage to deal with - that's exactly how it feels. I know no one needs that in their life but I SUPER dont right now. I feel quite resentful of her putting that on me.
Solid advice, thankyou. Think firm is the way to go.

I was quite anxious about telling him not to tell me things, but he took it well and we never spoke of it again.
After a few weeks, his girlfriend broke up with him anyway. I guess he told her?
We are still really good friends now :)

I think (as BettyCrockerr has suggested) - tell your partner (if you have one). x

Yeah I agree I'd be reluctant to call her an empath looking at it. When I typed the whole thing out and read it back I thought that (something I need to work on - looking at peoples actions instead of just believing who they tell you they are). I've never had someone in my life keep telling me they're an empath all the time it's actually pretty weird thing to do looking at it.
My heart is def telling me to distance myself from her and I think I just need to be firm and to the point with it.
That's really got me thinking, what you said about maybe shes telling me because she wants me to blow the whole thing open instead of her dealing with it herself. That never occurred to me at all and you could be right. I keep thinking out of everyone she could have confided in why me? My line of thought is more because I'm the most removed from the group (everyone else spends a lot more time together and are more enmeshed in eachothers lives, I've always been a bit more of a lone wolf) and also that I try and stay out of gossip so maybe she thought she could trust me to not say anything. I've seen it happen with other people though where they've wanted to be caught and they've acted the exact same as her, been found out and forgiven then done it again and again until they're found out

She seems like an awful person and I don’t think you’d loose anything by slowly distancing yourself from someone like her. In fact, you’d probably be doing yourself a favour.
Yeah that's what my hearts telling me. Slowly distancing myself from her would be my ideal but shes weirdly confrontational about this stuff so I think I'll just have to have it out with her. I never usually have a problem speaking my mind on anything but I'm struggling with this I think cos I already feel guilty for knowing

Yeah I have a partner he knows everything he could tell something was up (he gets on really well with her husband too so didnt want to say anything but had to)
I cant see her telling him at all (but anything would surprise me at this point). They have kids together so cant just split and go their separate ways

my husband had this happen to him.
he was married for 10 years and didnt know his ex wife was cheating on him for the full ten years and pre wedding too.
his ex wife told one of her best mates everything when she was drunk one night and she was so disgusted and said she had a week to tell my hubby everything. she didnt , so her best mate told him and hence the divorce and we gained the best mate and her hubby in the divorce

I really don’t understand getting married while you’re cheating with someone else. It fully baffles me. Just don’t get married?

I wouldn’t be friends with this person. She sounds toxic? Sorry not only cheating on her partner but also cheating with someone who is her FRIENDS boyfriend??? Unbelievable. Imagine if this girl finds out you know and haven’t said anything?

I distance myself from these types because I genuinely think their moral compass clearly knows no bounds. Is your husband next on the list? Who else could get hurt next?

I get what your saying and totally baffles me and i used to question it, his impression was she was young and used it as a way to move out away from parents

No lessons have been learned here as she keeps cheating and getting away with it. The truth will come out, I just don’t think it should come from you but you could pressure her into coming clean

My OH went to couples therapy, and had been planning our wedding whilst cheating. Literally makes no sense. Just go duck who you want lol
