Condensation on windows

Hi all!

Just wanted to ask for some advice. Every year when it starts to get colder, we wake up in the morning to find pretty much all the windows covered in condensation.

I’ve tried adjusting the heating, closing or not closing doors etc but never seem to get it right. I’m not sure what I should be doing.

We can’t afford any major works to the windows or anything but just wondered if anyone had any tips on how to avoid this?

Thanks!

It could be a lack of ventilation/ air bricks generally. We had the same thing and used a portable dehumidifier which helped for a few years but then installed a Nuaire Drimaster in the attic which has sorted out all our condensation woes. The portable electric dehumidifier worked a bit in whichever room it was in (and I often emptied the tank of water) but the Nuaire works throughout the house all the time.

I checked on Which website first to make sure that it was the correct type of damp we were dealing with here

Nuaire here - no affiliation, just a satisfied customer.

We had that in the front room and I put a couple of the Aero 360 moisture traps in there and we've not had an issue since as long as I change the 'cartridges' when they die.

If it's the whole house then recommend a more drastic approach like above.

Have you got double glazing? You can close them on a “night vent position” so it’s still locked and some air is circulating. This was recommended when I had a surveyor out for condensation but mightn’t be ideal if you live in a sketchy area. It has worked for me but can get draughty in minus temps.

They recommend keeping your heating on a lower temp rather than putting it on high then turning off. Also avoiding hanging washing on radiators and all the obvious stuff.

Sometimes Aldi have dehumidifiers on specialbuy so you could pick one of those up for less than £100, but the ones you sit on your windowsill with a powder tablet thing didn’t do much for me. I keep one in the hall and it fills with water but still have damp walls.
