I thought this might be a good place to find similar minded people.

I used to love these books. So much so that my stepmum did, and still does get me the new ones. She’s so pleased with herself I don’t have the heart to tell her I’ve gone off them. And my youngest daughter enjoys them.

I usually do read them but they do my head in now, and I can’t find anywhere to rant about them. I joined a group of Facebook but they’re obsessed! If you say anything slightly critical they block you!

Has anyone read them?

i like them, i like all misery memoirs, they are quite hard to find nowadays. I must say though and i know what she does is briliant. I sometimes find her sanctimonious and the way her own kids are perfect all the time. theres another one i read too whos the same but i cant remember her name. Also i always think, should she be writing books about the kids, i dont know?

yes thats it, casey watson, i do like reading them, they are good with the kids and they usually turn out well. But they almost make themselves seem saint like. It can get on your nerves after a while. i probably sound horrible, someone whos a foster carer will come on in a minute and slaughter me ! just to be clear im not putting down foster carers, just these books can be sanctimonious.

tory hayden is another one, but shes more of a special needs teacher.

There used to be loads of that type in the supermarkets, they are hard to find now. They sometimes have them in the works and a small selection in asda. Years ago there used to be a whole aisle of them, maybe they are not as popular nowadays. I like them for christmas because they are easy to read, upsetting, but you dont have to really concentrate on them. I can read them in one sitting.

there is one i read, that was really harrowing, it was the boy in the cellar, steven cant remember his surname, i wouldnt advise that one , it had me in tears. steven smith, i dont want to insult the poor man. He is happy now , but it is a dreadful story.

yes thats what i do , i usually read a victorian based fiction book in between, similar to catherine cookson, although they can be miserable too!

I used to read my mums Torey Hayden books when I was quite young without her knowing. I remember finding one of them in particular quite harrowing, about a little girl (Sheila?) who was being abused by a kind of cult who named themselves after Dallas characters... it really stuck with me, I sometimes remember it and think about trying to get it to reread it, maybe because I’m sure I wouldn’t find it quite so disturbing as an adult?

I think it was either One Child or Ghost Girl, from what I found on google.

To be honest I don’t really remember the ending, probably because I read it so long ago and when you’re young I feel like the worst bits seem to stick in your mind more! Another reason why I should probably read it again as I’m sure it would have had a better ending as you said

thank you , i will have a look for it myself, i have read so many i cant always remember if i have read them or not. Try it again , you might handle it better this time, you can always leave it, if it gets too much. I sometimes have to skip bits myself.
