Carpet Underlay

Not an expert but I wouldn’t dream of not having underlay

I wouldn’t risk it either. If you’re investing in some nice new carpet you want it to look as good as you can - if you can afford some underlay as well, I would get it if possible

Have a look on gumtree, ebay, facebook selling sites or Marketplace as you can get some bargains.

I would say to invest in underlay as you want your carpet to last.

Depends on the pile of the carpet - if it’s a short pile you’ll want that ‘bounce’ so you’ll need a thicker underlay. If the pile is quite long then you might only need a thin underlay. Hope that helps

I would definitely get it, we've only had our carpet a year but I can't remember which underlay we got.

I need abit of advice too - as I said we've had our carpet a year and already parts of are going bobbly, in 2 different rooms and it's the same carpet. The 2 other rooms have a slightly different shade but that carpet is fine, so I guess it's a different carpet. This might sound stupid but does anyone know if carpet comes with some sort of guarantee? I don't expect carpet to last a lifetime but a year is ridiculous. I don't want to embarrass myself calling them, so any help would be great!

Mine was fitted end of Oct last year and looks worn already it was a cheaper one but I expected it to look nice for longer

Have you got the recipt or invoice? It should say on there or if not google where you got it from and see if they state a guarantee on their website. Agree a year is silly!!

Thanks, I'll try that. It is an independent shop and they were really helpful so I'll give them a call.

We did previously go with carpetright but their customer service was shocking so decided to go elsewhere

I work for a flooring wholesaler and everyone working here plus me would go for the hard backing but saying that a great deal of my customers like felt back carpet as it’s a bit thicker and as long as it’s laid properly on a even subfloor (if it’s concrete - make sure its screeded etc) then it should be fine. We sell hundreds of hard back and felt back everyday - just make sure you have a good carpet fitter - you should be fine either way.

I'd definitely get underlay. If you buy it elsewhere they may charge you to fit it (local carpet fitter charged £3 per square meter)

I ordered a new carpet for my bedroom to replace the laminate that's there just now.

We are on a budget so when we were paying for the carpet the guy said 8mm underlay would be £60 on top of the carpet price but that we didn't really need the underlay as the carpet has a felt backing.

Came home and was texting a friend who said underlay is a must as she previously had a carpet without it and could see the uneven parts of the floor, but that could have been a cheaper carpet that didn't have a felt backing.

I've looked on eBay and can get underlay for £30-£40 for my room size.

I just wanted to ask for other opinions before making a decision?

Yes get underlay. It should be changed when you change your carpet too. Re the bobbly carpet, depends what you paid? Anything £12-15 a meter should last longer than that.

I ordered underlay from eBay this morning, £40 for the same 8mm the shop wanted to sell me for £60
