I work in marketing and branding so this is just my opinion.
I’d stay in North American and pay close attention to jobs in digital marketing, google analytics, audience awareness, but also try and get some experience in traditional marketing, like tv advertising, physical mailers etc. Starting at a smaller company with a good brand may help you as you’ll likely do more than one role within the team. I also don’t think it matters what company you start at if you have a passion for a specific industry.
Be ready to move jobs when you’ve learned enough and need more experience and/or money.
Essentially, marketing is a box ticking exercise with some creativity thrown in. Bigger brands often outsource their creative needs to agencies anyway, so it’s a case of sensible decision making and accountability when you get to higher corporate level. Those decisions are made easily if you’ve worked your way up and understand the marketing mix.
Good luck!
