Breaking up with your hairdresser

As the title suggests I’m thinking of breaking up with my hairdresser which is something I’ve never had to do before as I’ve always just had to due to moving! I was thinking if any, this might be a good time do so as the appointment I had this month was cancelled due to lockdown and new one hasn’t been made.

I feel awful typing this out as she is lovely and I get on well with her. I’ve been going to her/her salon for the last four years since I moved and I just happened to choose her place out of quite a few in the area.

Basically I feel like my hair could look so much better than it does. She always cuts it dry when I have always thought a wet cut is best and I feel like sometimes it just doesn’t sit right. Also I’ve been trying to grow it all the same length since forever and she always cuts into the front. I did have highlights for a while but have gone brunette again in last six months, I realise that I still have highlighted hair underneath but the colour she uses just doesn’t stay no matter what shampoo I use.I have it coloured a dark ‘espresso’ brown and now it’s more like an auburn! My last appointment was just before Christmas. I specifically asked please don’t use a red base too ☹ I feel like I only get a week or so of my hair looking nice.

Another thing is I am always there FOREVER. Like minimum 3 hours, I think the longest ever was like 5.5/6. She always has at least 3 others on the go so you’re sat waiting for your turn. Everywhere else I’ve previously been to have the same thing done I’ve been there 2 hours max. I really don’t look forward to the appointment for this reason.

Anyway, sorry that was so long! I just wondered what I should do - she will message me when lockdown is over I’m sure to arrange an appointment. Should I explain I want to go somewhere else or just not reply?😫 I have her on Facebook/Insta too which makes things double awkward. I feel sooo, so bad about this but I’ve thought I might be better off somewhere else for a while! Thanks in advance for any advice or your own experiences! Xx

I had to do this once. She was lovely and did my hair for several years and when she moved to a different salon I followed her there, but she never quite did my colour the way I asked for it. There were a few other niggly things. She often over ran with other clients because she was too busy talking to them and other and left me waiting, she’d also go on and on about how thick my hair is, which it is, but I can’t help that can I? Then she went on maternity leave and another hairdresser at the salon did my hair instead and she coloured, cut and styled it so much better. The difference was amazing and I realised just how badly my regular hairdresser was doing it, but when she returned after having her baby she automatically took back over again and there was an almost unspoken rule in the salon that stylists didn’t pinch each other’s clients.

So that was that. I really wanted to totally change my hair colour and realised that it would need totally stripping and bleaching first and I didn’t trust my hairdresser to do it, and I knew she’d whinge about it and try and talking me out of it so I just went elsewhere. Cancelled my appointment and never went back. My current salon are more expensive but so much more professional.

Thanks for your reply! Glad you have found somewhere you like 😊 would say the hairdressers I go to is mid range price wise but I honestly wouldn’t mind paying more if it meant I was happy.

I’m the same as you, I gave up my last hairdresser due to a move which I was grateful for as she was a family friend and not the best.

When I moved I just went with a salon I found in the high street, the girl was lovely but as time went on she wouldn’t listen to what I wanted. Spent to much time chatting and I just wasn’t getting what I was paying for. She always wanted me to go every six weeks which annoyed me as Like to go every 12+ as I colour at home. I was there for 18 months And the price went from £28 to £44 for a wet cut. In the end I just rang and cancelled my appointment and never went back. She’s personally text me with an offer via the salon and I’ve just ignored it.

Yeah she always wants me to go every 5 weeks too when it definitely doesn’t need doing that often. Or at least not if the colour didn’t wash out so much. I’m most worried for when she texts me 🙈

It’s hard but your not her only client and you won’t be the first or last to walk away.

Try not the think about it too much, if she texts either just say thanks but no thanks or ignore it. She’ll soon fill your spot in her books.

Oh I’ve done this loads of time! Last one I ‘broke up’ with, he would walk off mid cut to talk to a colleague! The cut was nice but the service was shocking. As was the woman who did my colour there, I had hot roots so many times. I just never re-booked and found another salon.

I think I am maybe overthinking it, it’s just difficult cos she feels like a friend as well as my hairdresser. I wouldn’t feel bad if she was a head 🤣

If she messages you then just say you are growing it out for a change etc and will contact her when needed etc.
Loads of people change hairdresser because they just want a change, hairdressers know this and theres nothing wrong in it. Its part and parcel of life.

Aww I had to leave my hair dresser - she was fantastic, just expensive when I was going through some financial difficulties. Luckily my friends mum is also a hairdresser and really, really good at colouring so she now does my hair (she doesn’t charge me so I just send some money to her daughters account for her to pass over or slip some under a vase in her house when she isn’t looking 😂)
My old hairdresser has never mentioned it to be but I gladly support her work on social media etc as she never did anything wrong.
Try not to worry, plenty of people break up with their hairdresser for all different reasons. The good thing now with social media is you get to see someone’s work before you go to them

That’s a good idea, thank you 😊

The sad thing is the ones I’ve had to leave due to moving were brilliant.

Yes that’s a good point re looking on Instagram etc 😊 the good thing is I could say I’m growing it out as the dark brown (which it’s supposed to be) isn’t a million miles off my natural colour.

Try to take emotion out of it. You are paying her for a service and are not tied into any contract. I also stick with saying "I will get back you". It might sound harsh, but I did the same with my therapist.

You won’t be the first or the last to move onto someone else!
I rang mine up and to cancel app and she asked to rebook and I said I’ll be in touch she said ‘ok no problem’ in a tone of she knew I wasn’t coming back.
They get it all the time, I wouldn’t worry!
I enjoy trying new hairdressers!

I’ve had to do this a few times because I feel like hairdressers either don’t listen to what you ask for or make excuses as to why they can’t do something. Don’t over think it honestly. If you’re not getting what you’re paying for then she’s leaving you with no choice.

Oh my god I am in the exact same situation. Only my hairdresser is a family friend so makes it more awkward.
I get my hair done, I’m never 100% happy with it yet I just can’t make the break.
I get blonde highlights and quite often they’re a bit uneven, sometimes they’ve even been a bit yellowish and I’ve had to wack loads of purple shampoo on, somehow she just never really cuts it how I want to, including one time I was growing it for my sisters wedding and she cut way way too much off - I just don’t feel like I should leave the salon and pay quite a bit of money for hair I’m not happy with. So awkward though isn’t it?!
Let us know if you manage to make the break 😅 it might inspire me to do the same!

My husband kind of broke up with his barber!! Lol.

Around Spring of 2020, he stopped going to the barber 'cause of Covid and started trimming his hair and beard at home. He has got it to a point now where he is actually very good at it. He used to go to the barber every 6-8 weeks which soon added up - more than I go to the hairdresser, lol.

Well, last Autumn, his barber texted him asking if he wanted to book an appointment as he was now reopened. It took my husband AGES to text him back. But eventually, he just said, he isn't comfortable due to Covid and his barber said ok and that was it, lol.

I don't think he will ever be going back! My husband has been trimming my hair during covid too and has done a good job. Shame he can't do balayage as then I wouldn't go to the hairdresser either, lol.

I’m glad it’s not just me 🤣 god help us! It is so awkward, I’ve had actual break ups I’ve been less nervous about 😂

My boyfriend has been doing the same and said he isn’t going back! I kinda think it’s easier for guys though. He got me to cut it the first time after his barbers was closed last year when I’d had quite a bit to drink so when I woke up in the morning I was like OMG was it as good a job as we thought it was, but it was actually decent 🤣 he’s been doing it himself though since which is fine by me, I don’t want the responsibility 🤣
