i’m 40 and same 🤣 why are so many hardbacks so BIG now?! i bought the strength of the few and was horrified when i looked at it because i don’t know how my hands are even going to lift that. there’s just absolutely no need.

(books i am talking about BOOKS 🤦🏼‍♀️)
Have you been reading too many cowboy/hockey romances? 😂

Also not sure about the age group on here but i’m early 40’s and finding it hard to actually hold a book for a long period of time, esp if its a chunky book, so then I’ll find that when I do put it down to have a little rest I immediately have to pick up my phone and then I just can’t get back into reading where I’m my Kindle. I’ve got my Kindle holder and clicker and I just click away 🤣
I get this. I had a taller than usual paperback the othet month for the library book club. The size of it was too big for my small hands. I ended up getting the kindle version to make it easier to read. (Lyrics Alley by Leila Abouela)

This month we’ve got a thick one, again uncomfortable to hold but I refuse to pay the £5.99 on kindle for this one so I’m struggling through in short bursts. (Life After Life by Kate Atkinson)

Every month I hope to get Before The Coffee Gets Cold for library book club because at least it’s small.

I don’t mind hardbacks so much as the weight of them usually means they open up easier than a big paperback. I also don’t mind big paperbacks if they belong to me as I can abuse them as much as I like.

I will say, I stilll really enjoy perusing the aisles of a bookshop, and absolutely judging books by their covers! When one appeals, I’ll look it up on Goodreads and add to my Amazon wish list. I’m Bezos’ witch 😔

now tell me, what’s this about a kindle clicker?!?!!

I just have physical books as you can see by my bookshelves. As you can also see I keep my books together if they are by the same author as it makes it easier for me to find them plus it also makes the bookshelves look neater.

I totally understand Kindles, I get the point of them. And if I got one I'd definitely read more casually just picking it up for five minutes etc.

But I just love real physical books. I don't want books and bookshops to die.

The smell, the feel, the shelves of achievement, the shelves of future reads, the joys of hours in a bookshop just browsing surrounded by fellow readers.

see there is nothing better in the world than shelves of books as much as I love my kindle

I definitely read more ebooks than anything - I read on the go a lot, and I also read more quickly on my kindle. But I love getting absorbed in a physical book, I love the tangibility of it, and also the thought of passing it on to someone else. The charity shop I donate to emails me my giftaid receipts, so at least I know not everything I donate ends up in a back room 😅 And I am a sucker for a sprayed edge.

And echoing @StephenTJackson, I also love a bookshop! I like seeing what booksellers recommend, and my local shop has a bookclub which is always fun, and I also enjoy browsing and seeing what catches my eye.

Before the Coffee Gets Cold is a lovely book, one of my unexpected favourites from last year ☺

I have more ebooks now because it's just so quick and cheap to buy. I can scroll in bed and own 10 new books for just £9.90.

Before I had so many ebooks, I wasn't reading as much anymore anyway because physical books seemed inconvenient to read in bed, one handed on a busy London train and don't fit all bags. I don't have to decide what books to take travelling or how many either.

Ebooks got me consistently reading again so that's a plus!

I’m blaming struggling to read hardback Alchemised for me not reading Strength of the Few yet 🫣
Planned to read it over Christmas, then a lazy weekend, then Easter but alas I keep picking up paperbacks (apart from my current read which is a B format hardback, my fav type of hardback).

Reading this makes me want to run off to a bookshop and it was only yesterday that I accidentally bought 3 books 🫣
