What books have you read that are also movies and how do they compare? I read The Glass Castle this week. I loved the book and watched the movie today, which I thought was terrible in comparison.

The only film that was even better than the book, IMO, was Atonement. I bawled my eyes out watching the film whereas the book moved me but didn't leave me wrecked with tears. The only series that was almost as good as the book (but not quite as creepy, mind you) was Behind Her Eyes. That book was a total mind duck.

Every other single film or series based on a book I've already read has left me disappointed. The Harry Potter films were the worst for me, in that respect. I was crushed at how different the films were to the experience of reading the books. Again, JMO.

Under the Skin with Scarlett Johansson, the film, made me ragey. It was SO NOT what the book was about. My husband and I were completely flabbergasted after reading the book and then watching the film.

There are so many but the ones that first come to mind as the best are The Godfather and Gone With The Wind.

The Godfather book has a better ending, I won’t give it away and it was only a small point but it just made more sense to me.

Gone with the Wind is a fantastic book but all the better for seeing Vivien Leigh bring her to life on screen so perfectly.

Jane Austen books tend to be better than the films because of the writing itself.

Wuthering Heights is a great book but I actually preferred the Lawrence Olivia film version, which is a slightly shortened version of the full story, as the acting and atmosphere were so good. I’ve walked that area myself a few times since seeing it as a child.

I'm currently reading "The Haunting of Hill House" after watching the Netflix series. The TV show changed so much from the original story. The only things that are reminiscent are the house and some of the character names. There was a film of it made in the 60s which I have not seen, but is supposed to be more faithful to the book.

I'd say the film One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest is almost as good as the book. Also very close with Requiem For A Dream. It's rare a film even comes close to the book for me though.

I have seen that film. The Haunting (1963) with Richard Johnson.

I haven't seen it for a very long time but I remember it being very creepy and atmospheric. One of those films that makes you rely on your senses rather than special effects.

I've also rewatched 'The Haunting' (1999) with Liam Neeson recently too. I've seen the Netflix version. I am strangely fascinated with the story but have never read the book. I should remedy that.

I loved reading the Odd Thomas books and thought the film was equally as good! Was upset to read the actor who played him passed away :(

I find it strange how people rave about The Green Mile film, compared to the book I found the film a little dull.

Bridget Jones Diary ( 2001) the book is a good laugh, but the movie is something magical. I’ve watched it about 40 times 🤣🤣🤣 it’s hilarious, Renee is brilliant as Bridget ( couldn’t imagine anyone else as her) Colin firth is just perfect as Mr Darcy. 😍😍The movie far surpasses the book!!

When I really enjoy a film or series adapted from a book, it makes me want to read the book (and sometimes even watch the other adaptations of the same book). I was never disappointed in that way and I love to see the differences or common points.

...'Under The Skin' is one of my fave books of all time and Michel Faber one of my fave authors...enjoyed the film but as you say, was really nothing like the book...the BBC did a good job on "The Crimson Petal and the White' adaptation, maybe because it was in 4 parts?

I always thoughts Hunger Games and Lord of the Rings were the best book-to-film adaptations. While I think they stressed too much of the love triangle in Hunger Games, the care that went into it was incredible. The scenes they cut don't leave the films lacking and they added pivotal scenes that are alluded to in the books. The score is amazing and the acting was spot on IMO.

Peter Jackson's LotR is just.... sublime. Great cast, great effects, beautiful score. Doesn't matter how much I watch it, I always, always cry. I feel that, for such incredible books, they really did an amazing job.

It's rare for a film to be as good as or better than the book but two I can think where the films are outstanding are A Kestral for a Knave (Barry Hines) and Misery (Stephen King).

I think the Harry Potter films (especially the early ones) were great for bringing Hogwarts to life, however as the stories became darker and more complex I feel that they just didn't do the books justice.

I remember watching the whole series with someone who hasn't read the books and having to fill in a lot of gaps and explain the back story from probably GoF onwards for things to make sense to them.

The author said she based Mark Darcy on Colin Firth's portrayal of Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.

There is a lot of back story and detail in the books that is missing from the films, and they lack because of it for me.

If the world was still enthralled by the Wizarding World, it would be prime candidate for a mega budget TV series on one of the streaming services.
