Blinds

When my husband worked nights, we had blackout screening material which fitted to the window by velcro strips.
They made the room incredibly dark even in the afternoons when our bedroom gets full sun for 2-3 hours. They kept the room really cool too.
I can't remember where we got them from but just google "blackout screen for windows", lots of results show up.
Interestingly, they mostly seem to be black, but ours were white!

I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on the best way to make my room pitch black in the day? In work nights and struggled with the lightz I have blinds/curtains but light comes in through the bottom/top/sides still
