Ooh i’m so glad this thread exists! I’ve seen sooooo many influencer and celebrity cases, black fishing or ethnically ambiguous fishing is like a trend now ?!
It may be seen as minor in the run up to things, however i cannot stand white women excessively tanning and then using black emojis.
And the picking and choosing aspects of black culture to “wear” as a way to raise their social profile.

Emma Tamsin Hill does it all the time. Also I came across a food instagrammed called Letsmunch. White boy but he talks like a road man from ends. His food looks good but the voice is aggravating.

There's a girl who's got quite a big following on TikTok and Insta, IssyOakley I think her name is. She does it all the time! A lot of people have commented on it on her TikTok when she does "get ready with me" vids and always ends up getting a passive agressive reply video

I think it’s really interesting how people get really defensive about it, tanning has always existed but if we were able to see how exactly it’s changed over the years maybe then people would see the problem!

Exactly! Like there are always so many comments from fiat 500 twitter saying stuff like 'what white girls can't tan now' and its like no ffs nobody is saying that! Like how people have major cognitive dissonance around black fishing is beyond me. The issue is cherry picking aspects of black culture on top of excessive tanning like wearing braids, the baby hairs, afro hairstyles, using AAVE, adopting a blaccent... etc the list goes on!

Quite a lot of these young girls don't seem to register that getting lip fillers, BBLs, doing booty only workouts - thats another case of cherry picking and emulating black features. It angers me sooo much that black women get shitted on, discriminated against for being black and proud of their culture, and then out hops some wealthy white influencer being praised and applauded for their "original style". Nothing original about wearing and capitalising someone else's culture that has nothing to do with you.

The Bopo/Plus size models aren't immune from this either. In fact so many hyper sexualise black men, using them like a trophy to elevate their social status, seems like having a black boyfriend for a lot of white plus size models/influencers is a right of passage...

Side note: I have no issues towards folks in interracial partnerships, It just gives me the major ick when a lot of these white women refuse to even make a stand about racism, and the most minimal action they usually do, is make a generic ' be kind we're all human ' statement when pressed on the subject.

You put it so perfectly! Growing up in the U.K. watching how it’s changed over the years as a POC you notice everythinggggg. The combination of all these trends is starting to emulate a certain look, but people are in so much denial it’s crazy. What I’m interested to see is if trends go back in a cycle again and this stops being ‘in fashion’. For some reason I can see every trend stopping except this. I feel like this ‘trend’ and ‘look’ of blackfishing is here to stay. And there needs to be more education about it because the gaslighting on this topic on social media is so enraging.

Are you referring to the likes of Iskra and Ashley?

I love this thread. As a white woman who grew up amongst black culture (my school was 80% black) and then lived in the “ends” as a 17-24 year old and a young mum I too have watched this grow and ebb over the years. I am proud that I can understand Jamaican Patois fluently and have been very close to a lot of customs and day to day family life of POC. At one point my daughter was the only non black child in her entire nursery (moot point her dad is South American) but I am not Black. I have mutual respect with my friends who are POC but blackfishing is a common problem now. I can remember a girl in the young mums hostel swearing blind that her white mum and dad visiting her were her mum and “step dad” as she tried so hard to pass as a WOC despite everyone knowing her family where all White
a disturbing trend indeed and I will watch this thread with interest
