Big / small age gaps between children

My brother is 19 years my senior. He was born abroad and I was born here in England. We had the same father but different mothers. Even though we never lived together growing up - when he came here he was old enough to get his own place. However, we have always been just brother & sister, never half-siblings.He is old enough to be my father but our ages didn't make a difference. It was only after our father passed away he became far more protective which is lovely, but sometimes we are not on the same wavelength as he is of an older era.

I’ve got 4, aged 6 and under!

B6, B3.5, G2.5 and a newborn.

There’s only 14 months between child 2 and child 3, i found that fairly easy, as the14 month old was easier to entertain and still had two naps a day, so I could still rest at times with the baby.

The gap between child 3 and child 4 is 2.5 years, but I’ve found this harder because child 3 is not in nursery yet, doesn’t nap and needs entertaining constantly. I have barely anytime with the baby.

Itll be interesting to see how the relationships change as they get older.

4.5 years. A financial decision as I couldnt pay 2 lots of nursery fees. I used to think Id have preferred a smaller gap but actually it suited me. Having time with new baby while eldest was at school. It also helped me a tonne that eldest could do things for themself. I.e get a small snack / a drink / go to the toilet on their own. As my youngest was a boob monster and never not feeding for the first 4 months.

There are two years between my stepchildren and then our son was born four years after my stepdaughter, so I guess a small gap for a “split” family really. I like the gaps they are between them all. We’ve never really struggled to find things that entertain all 3 at once.

Having said that, there’s 10.5 years between my sister and I. I can never remember it being an issue growing up and we are quite close as adults. It helps that I’m a little immature and she’s more mature 😉

There is then 25/27 years between me and my brothers! (Separate parents to my sister). Now THAT’S strange. They don’t feel like my brothers at all, especially given that my kids are older than them 😅 probably circumstances as well as age though to be fair.

Families… they’re a strange thing aren’t they?!
Blended families often have interesting age gaps . There were step- sisters both in my year at school . And people with half siblings old enough to be their parents.

Sometimes big gaps are due to a new partner ( as in my case).

Twins are interesting too. I've been told once twins are about school age, it's not much different to having children of different ages.

Between my 1st and 2 child there was an age gap of 4 years and 6 months and between my 2nd and 3rd child there was an 11 month gap.
My 2nd and 3rd were both boys and they are the best of mates as well as brothers and are also in the same year group at school. I'm glad there was a small gap, there was no denying it was hard but wouldn't change it for the world.
My daughter was 4 when i had child number 2, it was good as she wanted to help and we made sure she got involved too and not felt left out as she had our undivided attention for a long time.
I have always wanted 3 children and to have them before I was 30 which we achieved.

I have 5 years between by daughter and little boy. It has its pros and cons - pros she is such a good helper and my boy adores her and certainly looks up to her, whereas cons are it’s hard to find something they both like to do - especially in school holidays. My step son is 8 and my daughter is 7 so they are super close, so we’re hoping to have another soon as I want my little boy to have that close bond with a younger sibling 😍

23 months between my 1st and 2nd and then 25 months between 2nd and 3rd. We were done but seems the universe has other ideas and I am now having number 4. There will be a 3.5yr age gap between my 3rd and the youngest. I’m interested to find out if it is easier or harder!!

Five years between my daughter it we and son, was a young mum and any closer would’ve comprised my sanity. Planning to try for a third next October so will be at least 6 years between son and a baby

What are the age gaps between your children?

I have an almost 13 year gap between child 1 and child 2 then a 2 year gap between child 2 and child 3.

I've had more comments about my large age gap , it seems like smaller gaps are the norm.
11 years between my two Son’s & the look I get when I say Yes they have the same dad 😳. Well should say Sperm Donor cause he’s never fathered them I should of known really when my 1st was born he was a violent wick & that he’d never change

People seem to find big gaps to be odd. I've had comments that my baby was a 'surprise ' after a long gap. (I'm sure people think it's a surprisebaby as the parents get to the age where it is considered old to have a baby). But I know a people with tiny gaps and that was with a surprise baby

I come from a big age gap family, my older siblings were 21 and 19 when I was born, then I have another sibling who’s two years older than me. I love it, my older siblings really adored us growing up, we didn’t live with them or anything but we saw them pretty regularly. Now we’re all adults, I’m in my 30s, they’re in their 50s and we are still all fairly close.

I do however think my parents might be insane. There’s two and a half years between my first two, and then four years between the middle and my youngest. I cannot IMAGINE raising these three to adults and deciding to do it all over again. I do feel for my youngest as he’s currently nearly three and the older two are ten and seven, they’re very close and he’s just a toddler following them around desperate to join in!

26 months between my two, they adore each other and whilst it was hard when they were younger now they are older it's amazing!

I have a 9 year old and have been single the past 2 years, I’m starting a new relationship now and so if we were to have kids, there’d be about an 11-12 year age gap which isn’t ideal and I wouldn’t have planned it that way but such is life. I was hoping for about a 6 year age gap but it didn’t work out that way, and thank God really.

My mum had 4 children. I am the eldest, then there’s a 2 and a half year gap between me and my brother, then a little over 3 years between him and sister no 1, followed by a 2.5 year gap between her and sister no 2. We are 39, 37, 34 and 31 now. I played with my brother a lot growing up, we shared a bedroom for a bit too. I was 8 when the youngest was born, so helped out a lot, reading stories, making snacks even changing a few nappies. She was 10 when I left for uni, so I missed her teen years, but we’re pretty close nonetheless.
