Barking dog help needed!

We've a 9 year old labrador (Polly), who is so laid back and only ever barked when someone came to the door trying to sell something. Covid put pay to these people, so I hadn't heard her bark for months. Anyway, the neighbour got a new dog just before Christmas and she barks for at least 18 hours a day. It's a nightmare. The problem is, it's made Polly bark in response. I sent my other half round to ask them politely to try to keep the barking down. I work from home and Zoom calls are massively embarrassing and it's bloody annoying anyway. They said we can't complain because our dog barks too. Obviously they are right, but our dog only barks AFTER their dog has. If their dog didn't bark, our wouldn't either. Other than moving house, has anyone got any suggestions?

That's a pretty lame response from the neighbours. Doesn't seem like they're going to take your concern seriously but if not, the council will.
Councils have to investigate dog noise/nuisance complaints. They send out a warning letter but if this fails to work they can serve a Noise Abatement Notice.
I'm not sure how they investigate, whether they sit in your house or outside, but this should evidence that your dog is only set off by the other dog's barking.

Do they leave their dog outside barking? If so then I would suggest they get it in if its barking as it makes yours bark in response and its causing a disruption. Or is it that you hear the dog barking inside? Very tricky and stressful, I'd maybe try and explain again and say you'd like to reach a compromise.
I guess if that fails then you will need to involve the council.

I would try going back to basics with your dog's behaviour and telling her to be quiet and giving positive reinforcement when she is.

Or putting music or tv on for her to try and muffle the noise.
