As the title suggests, I’m planning a trip to Austria as soon as Covid-19 has fucked off and was wondering if anyone else has been? Where would you suggest going? What must I go to and see? 100% want to go on a Sound of Music tour as I bloody love it and it’s my favourite film - any suggestions for this too would be great. If anyone has any photos they’ve taken aswell, that would be fab 🙂

Sorry, never been myself but a friend of mine is dragging me to Vienna as soon as it's okay to travel again as she loves it soo much. So, Vienna?

I’m Austrian and basically from where Sound Of Music was filmed (lol my sister got married in the same church!).

I’d definitely not go in winter, I don’t know if you’ve already considered that. If you want the Sound Of Music vibe, wait til it’s green.

If you’re going to do the tour, you’ll probably stay somewhere near Wolfgangsee which I think is worth a day trip. There’s cute little towns and you can take a ship across the lake to go to one from the other. Or there’s a trail along the lake you can walk and then take the ship back. It’s also really nice to swim in.
I’m not sure if all the restaurants and cafes survived this past year but last time I went, there were lots of them too.
Definitely worth a day trip.

Not my picture, but that’s the trail

I camped in Hallstatt and it was absolutely beautiful!!!!
I’ve been looking at pictures there and it looks breathtaking 😍

Why did I get goosebumps reading the first sentence? 😅 That sounds like a dreammm

Isn’t the palace they used to film some of the scenes in now a hotel? Which Sound of Music tour would you recommend? I want to see everything, the photos look incredible 😍

Also, how long would you recommend going for to really see and do as much as possible? Part of me wants to go and not book a return flight 😅

Yea, I just googled and it seems to be! It’s called Schloss Leopoldskron.

😂 I have to be honest I only just watched Sound of Music for the first this year.
So I can’t recommend a tour, but I can imagine that they all cover the main stuff. Think there’s ones in big busses and ones in vans, maybe the van tour is better cos you can talk to the guide more directly.

For the Salzburg area I would plan 3-4 days but it depends on what else you’re interested in and your holiday style haha
It’s a really nice city to just walk around in and get lost in, I still love doing that. And I personally always plan in extra time for that when I go somewhere 😂

And there’s lots of historical stuff to look at, but if that’s not your thing, then you probably don’t need to plan in much time for that. But if you do, that’s definitely a whole day or two if you don’t wanna stress around.

Hallstatt can also be a day trip from Salzburg, I’m pretty sure there’s tour busses that go there too. But then I’d add an extra day for that.

Yes Hallstatt can definitely be done in a day! Totally worth it though!!!!!! It really depends on how you’ll be getting around. We did a road trip which is why we were camping there.

Another vote for Vienna from me! Absolutely beautiful, we went at Christmas and it was gorgeous

Vienna obviously. Salzburg is another good stop.

One thing I didn't like about Austria in general is that people are rude (and I lived in Paris & Brussels). They will speak to you in German and if you say you don't speak German, they will continue in German nonetheless. Not my cup of tea, but absolutely lovely country.

I ve been to Salzburg and the castle is beautiful. Check which days the sound of music tour is running before you go or as soon as you get there - when I went they alternated daily between a Salzburg tour and sound of music so I missed it.

I did ‘The Original Sound of Music Tour’ about 10 years ago and it was ace. This site, I think.

Would also recommend Hallstatt (especially if you can get there before tourism really ramps up again) and Grüner See lake.

If you go to Vienna, try and get to Kahlenberg (hill on the edge of the city) for a nice view and a walk in the woods.

Agree with @TheGlossy about the people coming across as unhelpful, verging on rude

We went to Gosau for Christmas a few years ago and it was beautiful. We weren’t that far from Salzburg so we got to visit there as well. The thing I found as well was that the people were LOVELY. We knew we were going to be coming in late one night and the owner said they would have already locked up for the night….so she gave us a set of keys! The snow was magical. I’d love to go back.

I've only been to Vienna in Austria but would thoroughly recommend, its a fantastic city. So much to do and see - absolutely loved the palaces. Great food, beautiful architecture. We travelled from Bratislava too which is close by if you fancied a day trip there.
