ASN children starting school

I have a 5-year-old son who was diagnosed with Autism and Global Developmental Delay at 3 1/2. He starts school next week (we’re in Scotland) and there are so many positives - he’s going to a fantastic school with a great ASN wing and we’re very lucky he’s quite laidback and adaptable. He’s non-verbal though and I’m so scared he gets bullied in the playground.

Anyone in the same position? It would be good to hear from people who maybe have the first year under their belt and survived!

My son isn’t ASN but went to a school with a wing attached, it was a great school where all the children just accepted each other for who they were. I know you will be worried but I am sure he will be fine.

My son started primary school last year (we’re also ). He has a diagnosis of ASD, is verbal now but with speech and language delays and SPD. He attends a mainstream school and I was very anxious about how he would cope, especially not getting to finish nursery properly due to the pandemic hitting and not getting settling in days/visits that we had been hoping for to make the transition easier for him. He’s made lots of friends within his class and adjusted far better than I anticipated. The school have also been very supportive which I know isn’t always the case. It hasn’t been easy and he does come home feeling overwhelmed at times, but he has come on so well since last year.

So glad to hear this! It’s such a worry isn’t it, and I knew there would be good stories, it just tends to be the bad ones we hear.

I hope primary 2 is just as, if not more, a success than P1
