Anyone else have an allotment?

As the title says...

3 weeks ago we signed the agreement for a half plot allotment, but it's still a decent size.

It's become a little addictive. We cleared out the beds the first weekend and have since planted broccoli, pumpkin, courgette, sugar snap peas, strawberries and a gooseberry bush.

So far so good... Today I covered the broccoli as the slugs were liking them a bit too much but everything else is thriving.

What else are people growing?

We've also turned a old strawberry bed into a flower bed full of bee friendly plants.

We got our allotment in April 2020 - it was a godsend throughout lockdown!

The best thing we did last Autumn was to rotavate all the beds, dig manure in and cover them all over with weed suppressant matting. It meant we had no battling with weeds come the spring planting season!

Slugs have DECIMATED almost everything this year - I’m on my third sowing of some crops! My partner had a lovely raised bed of swedes growing which he forgot to net and they were devoured overnight 🥲

I’ve found that using nematodes and then covering the ground in slug wool has really helped.

This year we have kale, broccoli, cauliflower, red cabbage, lettuce, onions, spring onions, garlic, sweet peas, broad beans, leeks, pumpkins, chard, dwarf beans, runner beans, sweetcorn, sunflowers, chillis, tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, cucamelons and luffas growing! A fellow allotment holder told me a few years ago to always sow more than you’ll need

I've had mine for 25 years... I love it so much. Last year was incredible.... This year is horrendous! Seeds come up, look great then disappear. Slugs I think. But possibly the manure we put down was still not absorbed into the soil and is kind of crusty acidic.

I think it depends on having the right kind of weather at the right time.
