My BSH is an indoor cat, I've let him into our enclosed garden a few times in summer months but he's generally there because I am.. if I go inside and close the door he scratches to get in right away. The breeder asked I keep him indoors and I was happy to do so but after a year I let him out but he's just happy following me around so I don't feel guilty about him being indoors. Advice would be get a hooded litter tray, get them neutered, regular grooming , access to scratch board and toys. Love British shorthairs they are really laid back companions and he's been great since my son came along too.

My plan for when I move and get a cat (will be indoors due to living near a busy road) is to get a hidden litter box. They are cupboards with a hole in for the cat to get in and out of, I just think it will look nicer. The one I’ve seen that I want also has a short carpeted walkway which should prevent litter going all over the floor as well.

I first came across them because I saw a tiktok of someone making one, they just cut a hole out of an ikea cupboard so that maybe a cheaper way to do it. I’ve never been to ikea so don’t know how much things cost there really
Make a quiet spot for your cat if you can. Mine has a large cardboard box she loves. The top is covered so dark from the top, bottom has a hole cut out + there's a a blanket underneath.
I'd also stick with indoors only if you can. Ours was attacked by a fox and needed surgery.

I have three cats. The eldest we got when he was 12, he used to go out but isn’t interested now. The other two are 2 and 5 months old and have never gone out. If you stimulate and play with them they do not need to go out. We have never had issues with damaged furniture either.
I have two cats and open access to the garden only one goes outside the other one has never gone outside from a kitten. She will in the summer if I’m outside but that is it. Problem is you can never tell what a cat will like and whether they will like to be inside or outside.
My boss has 2 cats, both have been indoor cats for a long time as she lived near a busy road. Since she moved to the countryside, she started letting them go outside and the older one (a Persian) wanders out but not very far, and the younger one (a Bengal mix) never goes outside even when the doors are wide open. Another friend has 2 Bengal mixes and neither of them seem interested in going outside. Her Maine Coon goes outside but again, not very far. And finally, my sis-in-law has 2 cats (brother & sister which is good as recommended here by others), the boy goes outside a lot and wanders miles away, but the girl doesn't go much further than the patio. I think cats are like people, they have different personalities despite their breeds. Is there a breed-specific rescue for cats? I know for dogs there is greyhound rescue, terrier rescue, collie rescue etc, so perhaps if you have a breed of cat you like, you might be able to rescue and get really good info about the particular cat's personality. Or if you buy a kitten then I guess if it never goes outside to begin with, it might not mind. Good luck anyway, all pets are so wonderful!
We have two cats (brothers) one wanders from home and has now moved in with a neighbour which is sad but they take good care of him and at least I know he is safe (I go and collect him for over night visits every week or so just so I can check him over and make sure he is ok) we also pay his vet bills, vaccinations etc.....
His brother is such a homely cat and goes out for the toilet but then is straight back inside and usually cuddled up on one of the beds or on hubby's knee. He has a character that I have never seen in a cat before, he is almost dog like with his need for attention and fuss he is so loving.
Unfortunately him and his brother dont get on (since we moved house for some reason) which is why the brother took off to live with the neighbour.

I disagree with people saying its not right to have cats stay indoors. I have a very happy nearly 2 yr old cat who is indoors. We live off a main and very busy road, also beside a train station too and I just constantly see missing cat posters

In the summer we bring her into the garden so she can watch the birds but 9/10 she will just run back indoors again at the slightest unfamiliar noise. I work 9-5 Monday - Friday but my partner works from home so she constantly has him there. She literally sits by the window with my partner on the computer and when she see's me coming up the road she gets all excited and starts rolling, trying to headbutt the window to get at me then she runs and greets me coming through the door. She has the full run of the house, sleeps on my partner all night, two huge cat tree's, two scratching posts, radiator bed, a million toys (her favourite is her teddy giraffe). I was always a dog person but My partner was always a cat person and in the end we decided that would be best but she has absolutely stolen my heart. Love her so much.
