I am probably going to sound like a horrible person........but why post those photos and private messages? Adam didn't want "us" to know you existed.......but 48 hours after his passing you want "us" to know you existed. And every photo seems like this "friend" is super clingy.
Glad he had someone to share his travels with..........just not sure why private moments had to be shared.
(I know, I know terrible. It's the cynical Gen X-er in me).
I went out to move my son's car, and I get in and swivel my head around and almost jumped into the backseatwhen this was my view...
After I moved the car and got back inside, I said to him "where did you get that air freshener?" and he said one of his friends gave it to him for Christmas.
Now I'm afraid the next thing will be waking up with the Urkel doll in bed between me and my wife!
Like most of you, Adam's videos entertained me for a great stretch. His videos also introduced me to Best Life & Beyond - which led me to this community and lots of additional entertainment reading the chatter here about them and the fascinating world of Disney Vloggers.
While I may not have followed his adventures closely over the past few years (more of my schedule getting busier than a comment on his latest content), I did catch the series of more recent videos about his first trip to Disneyland Paris and I enjoyed the genuine curiosity and happiness that he had exploring it for the first time. I thought how fantastic it was that he made his International travels happen by just YouTube Adsense (no manipulating for Patreon, SuperChats, etc. like the Predatory Grifters that hung on his coattails) as a result of being appealing to such a wide variety of people (Woovians) on a daily basis.
I personally enjoyed Adam the most when he was showing slices of Americana. I liked it from his perspective while he was essentially living out the American Dream of providing for himself/building something all from his own non-traditional grind and ingenuity.
While I am not a fit female of age 18-25 and therefore my presence may have caused social anxiety for the Big Guy, I did think a few times that it would be nice to give him a fist bump in the wild one day (in an appropriate setting) and say "Thank You for inviting us on so many adventures and motivating me to make time to go out of my way to explore more on road trips of my own".
As many have stated, there is going to be a hole for A LOT of people who had Adam's videos as part of their daily ritual. I hope his family and fans can eventually find some comfort by revisiting at times some of his 4,000+ videos and enjoying his adventures again on demand (for posterity).
Gone to soon, Woo. But for sure will never be forgotten. R.I.P.
We don’t have to scold him after death for not going to the doctor or whatever because we have no idea what his cause of death is. And even if it was something preventable, does it matter? Is it still not tragic? Or are we just trying to find reasons that this won’t happen to us. But it might. You never know what could happen any day.
Go to the doctor everyone. It might not save your life. Plenty of people who go to the doctor still keel over and die. But it could find something that you wouldn’t know about otherwise.
I would like to say Adam taught us other lessons too. Be kind to people. Foster friendships. Don’t gatekeep. Embrace what you love. Get out of your comfort zone. See the value in the mundane. Make your dreams come true. Honor your parents. Remember the past. Set goals. Fail. Set more goals. Don’t pull up the ladder behind you. See the world. Be weird. Let people into your weirdness. Don‘t forget your roots. Make time for others. Collaborate. Get excited about the future. Appreciate the present. Screw up and still keep going.
Adam was no saint. However, I know more about what he did everyday than people I know personally. He didn’t do everything on this list all of the time. But he did it more than most, on camera, for us all to see.
And love him or hate him, I bet he's hurting. He had some fun times with Adam. I actually really enjoyed their vlogs together.
ETA: Tim's comment also confirms what a lot of us have known throughout the years. That Tim doesn't have many (or any) male friends since marrying Jenn, and Adam was really his only true male friend (as Tim said "any other guy friend") that he could just be silly with (away from Jenn, if she let him go alone). Really sad for him, in that regard.
Very interesting....someone named Sofie posted in the other place:
"I’m a close friend of Adam’s and was recently on the Italy portion of his trip with him, he was extremely happy the whole trip, we both had the best time and made beautiful memories together that we said we will cherish forever He has changed my life, and nothing will ever be the same again. I am absolutely devastated and just wanted to share some photos. When flying out of Rome airport together (going to different places) I was crying and said to him “I’m just going to miss your presence, having you next to me every day” and he said “you’ll be with me in spirit” And also “don’t be sad sweetie”, “don’t get upset or I’ll get upset”, and “don’t be sad, we’re going to see each other in April, and we’re going to go on a lot more adventures”. We had plans for the future including WDW in April 2026, a possible Great River Road trip in September 2026 along the Mississippi, and a month long trip in March 2027 to London/Copenhagen/Stockholm/Oslo and Norway, and possibly a Northern Italy trip we had started drafting an itinerary for. I can’t believe I won’t have my friend around for the rest of my life."
This is probably going to ramble, but reading some of these last posts and seeing that "Birthplace of Walmart" vlog again got me thinking a bit more, so I'm just going to share some honest thoughts here (both positive and negative), as I try to wrap my head around his untimely passing.
I think so many of us snarked on him so hard, not because we truly disliked him (we wouldn't have watched him to begin with if that were the case!), but because, like @dirtnap101 perfectly summed it up, we wanted to see him do better, or at least be more of the person we knew he once was.
I won't lie. As I've said before, his flat out ignoring me, from an arm's length away, when I tried to say a simple hi, certainly started a shift in my once very positive opinion of him - as would anyone in my shoes. But I still watched him, and it didn't make me hate him.
MegaCon 2019, BttF panel line, standing next to me in the opposite switchback, I made eye contact (he was much taller than me, as I'm a petite woman), and I smiled and said "Hey! Adam the Woo! Hi!" and he looked at me, turned to the side and away from me, took his phone out, and put it up to his ear (as if he were talking to someone, but he wasn't talking). I was like, ok...that was awkward, but didn't try and push it, so I turned away too.
That being said, we knew he really didn't have social anxiety. He just picked and chose who he wanted to speak to and when (e.g., OK for an impromptu chat with Jack Black, typically not OK for your average Joe Schmo). Those early meetups his dad filmed (I shared those vlogs a few months ago) were the absolute opposite of what he'd try to portray in recent years. He really did seem to change around the time before and/or during COVID (so...around 2019-2020 and onward), and it coincided with his approach to year 50.
I don't know if it was the money, or what, but the constant spending in the last handful of years, including the townhouse cash purchase on a whim, the DVC cash purchase on a whim, the MiniMarge purchase, the first class everything (including in vlog titles)... it just seemed, for lack of a better term, "off" from who he truly was. It was too materialistic. I didn't need him to show me merch. Or repetitive pin or magnet purchases. Or humblebrag a 40-min first class flight vlog where the footage was virtually all food and looking out a window, or at himself.
I didn't want to look at the power pole for the umpteenth time. I didn't need to look at the pins again. We had Tim Tracker and others for theme park content. We didn't need soooo many Disney vlogs from Adam too. Or easy-money walk-and-talks, making proclamations over and over again.
We looked to him for the one-offs, the quirky sites, the unique places, the roadside stuff (like Justin Scarred would do, only less annoying... though Justin's vlogs are a way better edited product.) We were genuinely interested in where the next vlog would lead to.
I truly miss those old vlogs. They were nonrepetitive, taking us to places off-the-beaten path we wouldn't normally go. There were several vlogs we watched of his that we ended up going to the places ourselves here in FL (for example, Walt Disney's grandparents' grave in a small cemetery in Paisley we never knew existed). Like others have said, I learned something. He had a good sense of humor. He told a story.
He annoyed the shit out of me with his clickbait-y 192-is-a-deserted-wasteland stuff (IYKYK) and how he'd paint certain parts of town... (often derogatory and untrue). I detested the clickbait during Hurricane Ian about being "stuck" in the Contemporary that he opted to check into, and how he was more concerned with not getting into MK than people losing their lives, pets, and homes in SW Florida, never mentioning the latter once.
I was actually looking forward to less snarking on him in 2026 if he was going to do his old version of Americana-type backroads vlogs with the type of excitement he seemed to honestly have to get back to the road. And to seeing less of the smartass retorts he'd have to people's honest comments...telling his viewers to "F off" if they don't like his content.
There seemed to be an uptick in "old man shouting at clouds"-type of stuff with him in the last year or so, and I think that naturally only increased the comments here in this thread.
I truly think there was some sort of psychological thing happening, where his reaching 50 was really taking a toll on his mental health, and he was grasping at anything and everything "comforting" to him to sort of reconcile all of it. Maybe it truly was because he was alone. Sure, he had friends. But, at the end of the day, he was alone. Alone with just his camera. Sad, really, when you think of it.
He was such a study in contradiction. He absolutely adored his mother, but left the country purposefully missing Mother's Day (but made sure to be in town for May 4th a week earlier). He talked constantly about the simple life (punk!), but flew first class, bought DVC, $550,000 (overpriced) townhouse in Celebration, never-ending tchotchkes. Spending money like it was growing on trees. He would say he's used to criticism and people can say what they want, but many of us were most certainly shadowbanned. As aforementioned, he claimed social anxiety and didn't want to talk to people, yet would push to the front to get the best view, do things in public to bring attention to himself, and loved putting the camera on his face in recent years.
We joked about his appearance (with, again, choice words), not because we outright hated him...it was because we wanted him to better himself. If he went to the doctor, got a checkup, went on meds (if necessary), and embarked on a sensible eating and exercise program, what would there be to snark about? I'm inclined to believe the majority here would be glad to see this change. (unlike some threads where the vloggers can't do anything right)
In the end, he was no saint.
He was not perfect (none of us are), and he made his life public for profit, and we all ended up here for some reason or another.
However, like @dirtnap101 said, all that we wanted was not to be because he was just who he was.
He wasn't going to change. Not for anyone.
Whenever he'd say things like - "I'll do XYZ when I'm older," "I've got lots of time to do XYZ," or "I'm doing XYZ in 2027" - there was always a part of me (the neurotic superstitious part of myself) that immediately said - Don't say things like that! It's never guaranteed!
I think Tim Tracker, of all people, said it best when he mentioned his and Woo's connection to the song "Forever Young."
He really was completely trying to relive those days... those youthful days...the 80s and 90s... the best time of his life... forever wanting to be that "younger" version of Woo, but not quite accomplishing it, as it could not be accomplished because it was a different time. It was over.
And, almost like with any of the larger-than-life individuals who seem to leave us too soon, he never really was meant to grow older.
I don't think anyone here has suggested that these are mutually exclusive. Of course it's tragic.
Mourning isn't for the dead, it's for the living, and if using Adam - a guy who never went to the doctor and clearly looked unhealthy - as an example to others still alive helps someone escape tragedy, I'm all for it.
