I'm from Canada but watch almost 80% of things from the UK.
I need a crash course please.
I've noticed that people are extremely picky when it comes to accents. They don't like certain ones and if you sound like you're from the north it's a bad thing and it's looked down upon...
Posh ones (whatever that may be) is good but then people think they're better than everyone else.
There are so many accents for such a small area and it seems like it's the first thing people judge you on.

Those with Northern accents tend to be happier people

I've been guilty of that
I used to date someone form Glasgow and always got him to say "there's been a murder"

As the owner of a lovely Brummie accent, I can say the perception of us being thick is extremely annoying. Not to mention that when people hear that you're from Birmingham, they immediately launch into an impression that is pure Black Country, nothing like Birmingham at all! Anyway, rant over.

I don't think there is a UK accent that I really dislike. Everything has it's nice bits.

I grew up in the scummy bit of an affluent Scottish town, to an Irish mum and a Glaswegian dad. I went to uni at St. Andrews, fraternising with the home counties received pronounciation brigade, then moved to Plymouth and associated with the globe-hopping Navy sorts. After that I moved to Bristol, and after years of "y'what Jawk? Oi carn't unnerstan' yew" moved back to Scotland, whereupon I hooked up with a French person and got a job that involves me yelling loud, clear instructions to Eastern European people.

I sound fucking demented. Like a malfunctioning robot trying to emulate human speech.

It is funny how people use different words for things, I call it a barm. Neither of my parents are from Manchester so I think that affects the words I use for things. My dad insisted on calling pizza 'pitza'

When I first moved to the North I saw somewhere advertising Barm Cakes I genuinely thought it was some sort of regional cake I hadn’t tried - it was a bloody roll!

I also remember being taken aback when a shop assistant referred to me as a “cock”.

I prefer absolutely everything about the North. Most of the accents, the sense of humour, community and slower paced living. Just an observation but people here are also more inclined to brag about a bargain rather than how expensive something is. Which I really love.

I can imagine!!.....but I don't get why I see the discrimination all the time.
I watch Naked Attraction and they're always put off by the northern accents.
I watch Escape to the Country and NO ONE ever wants to live up north....

I'm from Salford, I really don't like the manc accent, especially not north Manc, it's too nasal. My favorite accent is Birkenhead scouse, it's not as harsh as a full on scouse accent, it's a bit more musical, which I think is probably the Welsh influence. I like a full on scouse accent too. I like to hear a Lancashire accent too. Not keen on cockney, brummie or west country. What I love about accents is how they change. There's a road, near the border between Salford and Bolton and the change in accent is massive, it goes from harsh, nasal Salford to deep, rolling Bolton, think Shaun Ryder to Peter Kay, I think it's amazing

Yep, those of us in and around London can have quite different accents as well. North and West London accents tend to sound softer than South and East London accents. Being from Essex our stereotypical accent is quite nasty.

Personally, I love Geordie

I'm from Essex and most people I meet think I'm from London straight away. I don't really like my accent much, I hear myself recorded and I'm like . I will say that the hammed up fake Essex accent that Gemma Collins and other twats from towie use DOES NOT represent us. It's made up horse shit and cringe worthy to listen to in my opinion.

I won't lie to you, my son does this to his Nanna as she's a scouser. It's always that and purple. He'll laugh at it for hours

Agreed! I'm not from Birmingham myself, but some of my family live there, so I get a bit defensive when people make nasty comments about the Brummie accent. I know most will say they're only joking, but it's still a bit shitty.

And, like you say, a lot of the time people put on a mock Black Country accent, which is a different accent and dialect.

It is possibly country wide tbf. But coming from London it is such a contrast where life is very fast pased, people are competitive and quite money driven, more inclined to boast about expense.

I’ve felt more at home in the North than I ever did in my birth city. People are a lot friendlier/approachable here too.

Hahahaha I'm from Warrington but I don't have the typical Warrington accent. We either sound like we are from Liverpool or Manchester depending on the side of Warrington that you live. My family sounds more Scouse than Manc but I have friends and they definitely sound Manc.

My partners family have the harsh nasally accent and there is a certain place I once lived here that begins with a D and ends with an M where they sounded so harsh and unlike anywhere else.
