Please be careful when going to abandoned buildings. I won’t say too much because this story was in the news and identifies me, but I went to an abandoned building for the first and last time a few years ago. I was trying to climb up the building and while I was there a man jumped off the roof and killed himself. I had to stay with him while he was dying, sobbing on the phone to an ambulance. They couldn’t find us because the place was very abandoned, so an air ambulance came. I will never forget it

I don’t have any of my own stories but leaving this comment as a placemark to read about others and hopefully see some pictures as this stuff fascinates me.

Not sure if there’s been a thread made around the topic of abandoned places but if there is, apologies in advanced.

Has anyone got any stories or news of abandoned places they’d like to share? Doesn’t matter which abandoned place it is, could be any from abandoned retail chains to theme parks. There’s no exact category the abandoned place should be under.

I think the Abandoned Six Flags New Orleans has always kind of stuck with me in a way. It opened in 2000 but then abruptly closed in 2005 due to the severe damage caused by flooding from hurricane Katrina. The aftermath of the hurricane left the park submerged in 20 feet of deep water, it also took a month for the water to leave the park but the damage was already done. It used to be Jazzland from 2000-2002. I believe the park’s fate was because of how shockingly expensive the wind and water damage was and the company just didn’t see a future for six flags New Orleans. I’ve watched videos of “urban explorers” going to the park and giving us a look in. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on with the park and if there’s plan to either re-construct it or demolish it and replace it with something else. It’s depressing to read and watch about it though because of how severe HK was and the lives and jobs it took.

Another one that made my blood boil with how the media and the locals were behaving, was the time I read about a family who lived in London in the early 2000’s (I believe?) who just abandoned their family home and left everything there. I’m not gonna speculate the reasons as to why it happened and how it did because from what I read from this certain house from the media (from publishing about the abandoned house years later) it seemed that the family were screaming for privacy and nobody was giving it to them, people, who were local knew about the house and were stealing from it, others, including an urban explorer just went into the house? When the family clearly still owned the house but aren’t living in it? I have nothing against being curious or even urban exploring but when someone is asking for privacy not to trespass on their property, abandoned or not, then they’ve stepped over a line? It’s utter disrespect and I hope the family are being left alone in peace.
